Tic Disorders

Tics are sudden, recurrent, non-rhythmic, involuntary movements (motor tics) or sounds/vocalization (vocal tics). The onset of tics is typically between 5 and 7 years of age, and they tend to be at their worst between the ages of 10 and 12 years old. Tics tend to wax and wane over time. Some kids who experience tics do not need formal intervention/treatment because the tics will subside on their own or because they can be easily ignored. Other kids may benefit from treatment for the tics because the tics are bothersome, painful, causing stress, disruptive, and/or impacting daily life. There are both medication and behavioral approaches to treatment.

Dr. Lily employs an evidence-based behavioral treatment called Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) when working with clients presenting with tics. For more specific information about CBIT, click here.
