Parent Consultation and Parent Training
Parents often seek out consultation and parenting support for concerns such as behavior problems in their young or school-aged child (e.g., oppositional and/or aggressive behavior), delayed potty training, encopresis, enuresis, sleep difficulties, and anxiety that is interfering with their child’s daily life.
In my work with parents, I emphasize evidence-based treatments that highlight the importance of both responsive/sensitive parenting as well as behavioral approaches to managing behaviors (e.g., The Incredible Years and Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)). Sessions are individualized based on the needs and characteristics of the family. I also continually evaluate the treatment effectiveness in order to ensure that we are making progress towards the treatment goals.
During parent training and consultation, the focus of the sessions is working with parents--the child may attend some but likely not all appointments. I see the most success when parents are practicing the skills learned in session between appointments. Recurring appointments may occur weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on the presenting concerns.
